Did you know that using first hand experiences is one of the BEST ways for children to learn?

Research shows that children who are taught using first-hands teaching methods do better in school than those who are not. That is why at King’s Oak School we use many different first-hand activities for kids that are FUN and engaging. We love teaching with all different types of learning materials to bring learning to LIFE! One of our favourite topics in Nursery department is Life cycles. Teaching children about life cycles is a perfect way to help them understand the world around them and to connect them with nature. That’s why we hatched chicks in our Nursery, it was a marvelous way to stimulate discussion about life. Over the course of 21 days, the children were able to observe the eggs in the incubator. After all this time we could see the first cracks…What excitement! Word had quickly spread and in no time the whole school knew!

The newly-hatched chicks stayed in the incubator until their feathers were a bit drier.  At that time, they were transferred to a special box made just for them with a bottle with hot water to keep them warm, towels and food and water for the chicks. For the rest of the week, each class had the chance to visit them.  The children were completely enchanted watching the chicks in the box! In addition to observing them in their box, the children were also able to pet and/or hold the chicks.  We loved watching their faces as they held the chicks!  What an amazing experience for them, as well as for the teachers.
