Eco-Schools: A Shared Commitment

For the past six years, the Eco-Schools Green Flag has represented a sustained and meaningful commitment to environmental responsibility at King’s Oak British International School. It is not a one-off achievement, but a reflection of consistent, thoughtful work carried out by our pupils, staff, and wider school community to embed eco-awareness into everyday school life.

Our Eco-Schools approach is guided by clear values that shape practice across the school: respect for the environment and for one another, responsibility for our actions, integrity in decision-making, and the understanding that lasting change comes from steady, purposeful effort.

Eco-Schools is an international programme that supports schools in embedding sustainability into both learning and daily practice. It empowers young people to understand environmental challenges, take informed action, and develop habits that contribute to a more sustainable future. Central to this work is pupil voice, with students encouraged to reflect, lead, and engage meaningfully with their community.

At King’s Oak, Eco-Schools provides a clear framework for nurturing environmentally aware, responsible, and engaged global citizens.

Pupil-Led Sustainability

At the heart of our sustainability work is the King’s Oak Eco-Committee, a pupil-led group made up of students from across the school, supported by staff and guided by shared responsibility. The committee meets regularly to review our impact, raise priorities, and turn ideas into practical action.

Over time, these environmental reviews and discussions have led to meaningful changes across school life. Students questioned the use of plastic in everyday routines and helped shift daily snacks towards fruit and healthier choices. They also campaigned for and helped establish a compost station, supporting a more thoughtful and circular approach to food waste.

Care for the environment is also visible in the spaces our pupils learn in every day. Spring gardens and plants in each classroom have become part of daily routines, encouraging responsibility and connection to the natural world. Across the school grounds, trees planted by our students continue to grow, quietly reminding us of the lasting impact of small actions and the potential held within a single seed.

Recycling stations now sit across the campus, making sustainable choices simple and consistent. Alongside this, an upcycling hub brings creativity into sustainability — a space where materials are reused and reimagined, particularly ahead of major school events.

Together, these initiatives reflect a pupil-led approach rooted in awareness, responsibility, and steady action.

Eco-Schools Projects in Action

Our Eco-Schools work is strengthened through carefully chosen projects that support learning across all age groups.

Through LEAF – Learn About Forests, pupils explore ecosystems, biodiversity, and the role of trees in sustaining life, with learning taking place outdoors whenever possible. These experiences deepen understanding while fostering respect for the natural world.

In Secondary, students take part in Young Reporters for the Environment, investigating real environmental issues and communicating solutions through articles, photography, and video. This develops both critical thinking and a strong sense of environmental responsibility.

Our youngest learners engage through planting initiatives and creative projects, expressing their understanding of caring for the planet through hands-on exploration and artwork.

These strands are brought together in our Eco-Journal, which documents initiatives, reflects on progress, and records how our school continues to grow within the wider Eco-Schools community.

Throughout the year, pupils also mark key environmental moments such as Earth Hour, International Day of Forests, and International Day of Eco-Schools, when learning moves outdoors and the whole school community comes together to focus on the environment we share. The green fence and trees that now frame our school stand as living symbols of continuity, care, and collective effort.
