Poetry in Year 3
This week the children worked hard finding ideas and writing their ‘Through my Looking Glass Poems’. They started by listening to the different sounds of everyday life in our school and then they produced a ‘Wow-word bank” The children used this to help write their amazing poems. They thought about what they would see, hear, smell and touch in their fantasy world. We teachers have been enchanted with their creativity and imagination and how they have used all the skills they have been taught to draw their ideas together to produce such fabulous pieces of poetry. Well done Year 3.
Year 5 and 6 – Citizenship
This week, as part of their Personal and Social Studies, the children have been thinking about how bullying may impact on children’s lives. As part of their learning, the children visited the cinema to watch the film ‘Wonder’.
Based on the best-selling book of the same name, the film charts the progress of August “Auggie” Pullman a boy living in upper Manhattan as he goes to school for the very first time. He has a rare medical facial deformity and is bullied by other pupils. We learn how he eventually overcomes his difficulties and the film also touches on why people feel the need to bully others. It was a very thought-provoking and at the same time, heart-warming movie, the themes of which we will be following up. Indeed the first drafts of their poems showed how this film had impacted on the way they viewed others.
